The October 2018 opening of Cederberg Ridge in the Western Cape saw the dream of owners Anton and Kate Bergh come to life. The beautiful stone-clad homestead is set on a 3000ha citrus and grape farm and has panoramic views of the magnificent Cederberg Mountains. It is geared to offer guests a memorable and life-enriching experience.
The Cederberg is home to the owners, so as Kate puts it, “For us this is personal. We want our guests to witness a completely different side of the Western Cape when they stay with us. Here there are no manicured gardens, glitzy shops or touristy ‘attractions’. What you get is raw, rugged beauty in bucket loads, along with a sense of utter peace and tranquillity.”
The luxurious wilderness lodge comprises the homestead, which has a modern African farmhouse feel, nine guest rooms, a restaurant, sitting room, bar, library and spa facility as well as a large outdoor swimming pool, boules court, croquet facilities and magnificent indigenous gardens that flow into the veld. Guests can enjoy star-gazing and story telling at the lodge’s fire-pit, or wine tasting at the lodge.
All nine rooms (four Superior Suites, three Luxury Suites and two Classic Rooms) have outdoor showers and fireplaces. They also contain romantic sleep-out decks for those who want to dream under the stars. Complimentary WiFi is available in all guest rooms. Guests can choose to have a spa treatment in their room if they prefer.
Luxury Suites are 52m² with stunning views over the Cederberg. Cosy window seats are the perfect spot to relax with a book and enjoy the view. The bathroom includes a free-standing bath with its own expansive view. A charming stone terrace offers both sun and shade.
Superior Suites are 64m². Over and above offering the same facilities as the Luxury Suite, these rooms have a walk-through shower and built-in day beds on the deck.
The Superior Honeymoon/Family Suite has a separate sitting room and generous terrace. It can be combined with an adjacent Luxury Suite to create a two-bedroom villa. Two Luxury Suites can be booked together to create a Two-Bedroom Suite. Both of these options are ideal for families or friends travelling together.
The Classic Rooms have a full en-suite bathroom with bath, shower and double vanity and are perfect for those who like to be close to the main lodge. One of these rooms is frail or wheelchair friendly with plenty of space to move around, a ledge seat in the shower and handles near the toilet.
Activities in the area include guided walks, mountain biking, rock art excursions and water activities on the dam. Guests can choose to take a scenic excursion into the high Cederberg or head for the charming restaurants and Bird Island on the West Coast.
