Felix Unite River Adventures has been organizing paddling trips for groups along a 35km navigable stretch of the Breede River since 1989. As guests travel through the gentle waters, they are rewarded with views of fruit orchards and vineyards in this picturesque valley. Operations manager for Felix Unite River Adventures, Alain Coetzee, tells Leading Venues about their active adventures which have remained popular with groups for over three decades.
Base camp for these adventures is located about two and half hours from Cape Town, just outside the quaint town of Swellendam. Alain advises that up to 68 guests can be accommodated in rustic A-frame cabins at Round the Bend Lodge with another 20 people accommodated in the four-sleeper, luxury self-catering houses at the nearby Aloe Ridge. Luxury tents can be erected and pitched alongside the river for groups larger than 88 people.
Alain says that Felix Unite River Adventures can tailor their conferencing packages depending on the requirements of a particular group. “Round the Bend’s conferencing centre can accommodate up to 120 people cinema style and has all the bells and whistles that a group could need. We cater in-house and pride ourselves in serving up hearty home-cooked meals. Our potjies, cooked over an open fire, are particularly popular with guests,” says Alain.
“For rafting excursions, we adjust the course according to the guest’s level of fitness and skill to ensure than all of our participants find the activity enjoyable. The river ranges from class one to class two rapids and offers a gentle paddling experience. Small groups go out accompanied by a lead and assistant guide. They are taught the local flora and fauna spotted along the banks enroute. We take safety very seriously and ensure that our guests wear lifejackets at all times and that all of our guides are qualified first-aiders,” he explains.
Felix Unite can also assist with a number of other fun team-building activities. They offer on-river raft building, abseiling and wall climbing. Their survival series is very popular with guests and includes a number of mental and physical challenges which build up camaraderie and trust and often assist in teaching teams to communicate more effectively. One activity, Alain explains, involves blindfolding a participant who is then required to navigate a maze with assistance from his or her teammates.
The Breede River Valley is also home to the charming towns of Robertson, McGregor, Worchester and Tulbach which are all lovely to explore. The area – which forms part of Route 62 – the longest wine route in the world – also offers groups wonderful wine and brandy tasting opportunities.
